American hops give this IPA a gentle and fruity hop flavour. An American style IPA should have that fruity bitterness, preferably with a grapefruit orpine aroma. In comparison, an English IPA should be lower in alcohol and in fruitiness.
In the Netherlands this beer is named after the small lake between Spaarndam and Haarlem: the Mooie Nel. Outside the Netherlands a better known body of water inspired the name. In the Netherlands they used to brew IPA as a ‘scheepsbier’ (shipping beer) or the more hopped version ‘duraebel scheepsbier’ (durable shipping beer). ‘Scheepsbier’ was beer especially brewed by the Dutch to take with them on their journeys at sea.
Therefore theories exist, stating the IPA is actually a Dutch invention.
